THE BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE
Manchester City as
”Worthy Champions”
Abu Dhabi has
proven one more time to the world that
big spending on a club can change the history and reputation of that club,
where it not so, Chelsea football club would still be grappling for a
premiership title but for the timely intervention of billionaire Roman
Abrahamovich. My focus however is not on Chelsea but the dramatic and emotional
twist that engulfed the English league this season. The New era for Manchester
City {the blues} started when Abu dhabi bought majority of the controlling
shares of the club and granted its management assess to his colossal wallet to
bring to fulfillment the dream he possessed for the blues, the resultant effect
saw the exit of then Manager Mark Hughes and the coming in of Roberto Mancini
from Italy, followed by the ‘big bucks’ spending that saw the emergence of
Vincent Kompany, Carlos Tevez, Nasri, Silva, Kun Aguero, Dzenko, the toure’s and
finally my favorite of them all, Balotelli.
When the Barclays
premiership kicked off mid-august of 2011, the club was on fire as they were on
an unbeaten run though stopped by
Chelsea, this gave them a nine(9) points
lead on the table, opinions started flying around that the Blues performance
was just a mere initial gra-gra and that after the December break they would drop points, they did prove their
critics wrong though not for long, as injuries sustained by key players in
addition to the loss of the toure’s to
the CAF African Nations Cup , made them drop the points after all.
With five games to go,
a drop in place from first position, trailing with three points and a game in
hand against Manchester United {the red devils} at the theatre of Dreams{old
trafford},at this point Emotions had reached its twilight for the management,
players, coaches and fans of both clubs i.e Manchester united & Manchester
City {Red V Blue}, Amidst all these, Roberto Mancini assured all followers of
the game that all was not lost, most had written him off but to their Utmost surprise the Angel of change
was not yet through with her antics. Not only did the Blues beat Red Devils,
they reclaimed their fist position due to their superior scoring skills this
season. The Blues were on a voyage to claim their first title in forty four
years, with three games in hand every anti-blue fan started praying for their
downfall, God in his infinite Wisdom did not answer.
Events reached its
climax on the final day of the season, Manchester United was to take on
Sunderland while Manchester city was to take on relegation threatened Queens
Park Rangers{QPR} and both was to be played at the same time. The matches
kicked off and Manchester scored an early one against sunderland, thus,
temporarily awarding them superiority at the table, the blues also responded by
scoring against QPR, halftime came and went, QPR energized with words of
encouragement from Manager Mark Hughes then equalized and took the lead, at
that moment, Mancini felt like ripping himself from himself, he was screaming,
yelling, squatting, standing and moving all at the same time. Lovers of the
game watched in suspense as the title was about to swing the way of Manchester
United again, but yet again, the twist
had not ended, with Manchester United winning their Game against Sunderland and
Manchester City still losing at the ninetieth minute, the God of Soccer
suddenly intervened and turned things
around, a last minute strike from Dzenko and Kun Aguero saw the title to finally
find its rest in the nest of the Blues.
KUDOS to Worthy
Champions of the 2011/2012 Barclays premiership season…….. “Oluwa is involved”
